Consider the functions f(x) = 7x -2 and f(x) = x3 + 5. In these functions, when x increases, f(x) increases, and when x decreases, f(x) decreases. If all the variables in a function change, why are some variables called independent and other variables called dependent? Give examples to clarify your explanations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The independent variable is the x in the equation f(x)= ....., this is because x can be anything it wants to be with no restrictions. while f(x) is dependent, because it relies on what the x is to determine what the f(x) is
