Simplify. (8x² + 7x + 4) – (6x² - 3x – 4) Sorry if this is wrong, but: So it's 2x^2+4x+4? Or did I do that wrong?? I was told to combine like terms by subtraction, did I do that right?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

did he want you to factorize

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

remember, - - => +

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be 2x^2+ 10x+8 because when you subtract a negative you are actually adding a positive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. So is that the simplified form or just a simpler form of the original problem? Does it still need to be simplified??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the simplified form is just a fancy word for answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that's the answer then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. Sorry for being so dumb about it. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, sorry, one more question. What would be the best way to show that? Like if you were told to show the work??

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

you would like to break the bracket

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

(8x² + 7x + 4) – (6x² - 3x – 4) =8x² + 7x + 4 – 6x² + 3x + 4

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

=8x² - 6x² + 7x + 3x + 4 + 4 (if you like to group them)

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

=(8x² - 6x²) + (7x + 3x) + (4 + 4) (it doesn't actually need so much steps)

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

=2x^2+10x+8

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

those steps are unnecessary lol
