What does Atticus means when he talks of "polite fiction"? He is referring to the kinds of novels that are appropriate for children. He is referring to the way people tell a white lie so as not to hurt someone's feelings. He is referring to the beliefs that some people cling to in order to avoid having to confront harsh reality. He means that some people are polite to impolite people because that is just the way they are.
