Davis was pretty much a product of his times, and he felt that slavery was necessary in order to improve the lot of Africans brought over to the Americas as slaves. It was kind of like the White American idea about civilizing the Native Americans. Davis actually did try some different things with his slaves, like allowing them to have their own "courts" to set their punishments, and he educated some of them. One of his closest companions was a slave he owned. Davis expected that eventually all slaves would be emancipated. He also believed that slavery was necessary in order for the South to continue to be a cotton-based economy. And as another answerer says, Davis believed that the Bible sanctioned slavery, and relying solely on Scripture, due to his Protestant roots, he accepted that as final.
