Malik bought chargers that are shaped like regular octagons. If the chargers have the dimensions shown below, what is the area of one charger?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

272 square inches 164 square inches 128 square inches 68 square inches

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

shown below? where? the posting must have been really below the screen :|

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ahemm...=)

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... the Area of a Regular Polygon is \(\bf \cfrac{1}{2}\cdot apothem\cdot perimeter\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is half 4?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

but one of the 6in there, tells me it's not a regular octagon

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of the total by adding all the numbers?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, they want the Area, so you'd sum up all the Areas of the triangles and the rectangles in it, because the equations for a regular polygon, won't work because it not a regular polygon

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u add up all the numbers and then time by 4 which is half of 8?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, I'd get the Area of the triangles and rectangles in it, and add them up

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

recall that the Area of a Triangle is \(\bf \cfrac{1}{2}\cdot base\cdot height\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

confusing me

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

|dw:1385065001367:dw|

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

all 4 triangles in the shape, seem to have 4 for height and 4 for base

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

and you'd use that to get their Area, \(\bf \cfrac{1}{2}\cdot base\cdot height\)

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

then you'd get the Area of the rectangles in the shape, and the sum all Areas up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what is the answer

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... what did you for the Areas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4*4 is and haft of 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4*4 is 16

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmm 4*4 = 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

done

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm \(\bf \cfrac{1}{\cancel{2}}\cdot \cancel{4}\cdot 4\implies 2\cdot 4\implies 8\)

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so you have 4 of those triangles, so 8 * 4 = 32 so all 4 triangles area add up to 32 inches
