f(x)=3x^5-2x^3 determine if the function is even, odd or neither

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

With polynomials, here's a neat trick: If all of the exponents are even, then the polynomial function is even. If all of the exponents are odd, then the polynomial function is odd. If there are a mix of even and odd exponents, then the polynomial function is neither even nor odd.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so this function is odd?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exactly since the exponents (5, 3) are odd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so this one is even f(x)=22x^4-3x^2? sorry just wanted me to make sure I am doing the right thing

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep, the exponents 4 and 2 are both even, so the polynomial function is even

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

again, this trick only works for polynomials

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
