If you are finding the line perpendicular to x + 3y = 5, what is the slope of the line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you re-organize the equation into standard format (y = mx+b)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + 3y = 5 becomes y = (-1/3)x + 5. To find a perpendicular line, take the reciprocal of the slope and negate it. so -1/3 becomes 3. 3 is your answer.
