find the degree of the polynomial with the terms y= 3x^4-2x^3+3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand degree is largest exponent so it would be 4 but what is the term?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=k(x)^p if the degree is p the term is k(x)^p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay so the term would be the entire 3x^4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually i think the terms may be 3 right? since their are 3 parts to the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no 3 would be called a coefficient

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me enter it on my hw hopefully its correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x is is the term. 4 is the degree

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

for y= 3x^4-2x^3+3, the leading term is 3x^4 (since it's the first term) the leading coefficient is 3 (it's the coefficient of the leading term) the degree is the exponent of the leading term, so the degree is 4 the degree is equal to the largest exponent (for any polynomial with a single variable)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was wrong..it says the term was actually 3 even though i am still not sure why? says the answer was degree=4 term=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe the question was just worded strangely

OpenStudy (ranga):

3x^4-2x^3+3 first term is: 3x^4 second term is: -2x^3 third term is: 3 Total number of terms = 3 Sometimes also called a trinomial (three terms) If there are just two terms it is called a binomial one term: monomial.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks for the explenation

OpenStudy (ranga):

yw.
