OpenStudy (anonymous):

how does glucose enter the cell?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I believe this happens via active transport, meaning that it requires some form of energy, \(ATP\).

OpenStudy (rina.r):

In the body, glucose is abosorbed by cells in two areas- the GI tract and the kidneys. It is too big too diffuse through the membrane itself, so it is transported by what is called Secondary Facilitated Diffusion. Sodium attaches to a protein channel in the cell membrane which causes a change in shape. This allows glucose to 'fit' or bind to the protein as well. It does this because there is a lower concentration of glucose inside the cell than outside. It goes through the protein channel, the loss of the sodium and glucose allows the protein to revert back to its original shape, and the process begins again.
