I need help with a distance and time problem

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok distance = rate*time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes its a word problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A trail is 28 miles long. Group F starts at one end walking and Group S starts at the other end walking toward each other. The F group walk one and half miles per hour faster than Group S. They meet in 8 hours. How fast was each group walking?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the distance 28 miles?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

|dw:1385184319268:dw|

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

you have 2 variable, you dont know how far "f" went in 8 hrs and you dont know how fast group "s" was walking use "distamce = speed*time" to set up 2 equations solve system of equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so I can say: Group F is: d + 8=28 Group S is: d-28-x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it: x=y+8 x-y=28 x=Group F y=Group S

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

umm no you lost me

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

what do your variables represent? in my diagram..."x" is distance group F traveled "r" is speed group S walked

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

r+1.5=28 x=r-28

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

not quite distance = rate * time look at group F what represents distance they traveled? what is rate they are going? time is given as 8 hrs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distance for group is unknown rate is 1.5 miles per hour faster

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

correct when its unknown you use a variable, thats why i used "x" and "r" in the diagram

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it: 8+1.5=x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no 8 is the time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is correct to write the equation as: r+1.5=x

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

not quite....."r+1.5" means 1 and half mph faster than unknown speed "r" that is the rate for group F

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

distance = rate * time x = (r+1.5) * 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=8r+12 x=28-r d=28-8r+12

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

"x =8r+12" is good where did "x=28-r" come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got it from your diagram try to figure out when to incorporate the 28-x

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

well we havent done group S yet what is distance ? what is rate? again time = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is x=r+1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm so confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let me talk it out

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok you are just over thinking it, everything you need is in diagram and the formula distance = rate * time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

s walked 1.5 miles per hour less

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the distance is 28-x x=8r+12 28-8r+12?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

good distance group S walked is "28-x"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d=28-8r+12 d=16-8r

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

hmm no "d" you dont want to use a 3rd variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is a 3rd?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the r+1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have x=8r+12 r+1.5 28-x

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok just focus on plugging into distance = rate * time for group S

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yes x = 8r +12 is our equation for group F :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

28-x=(8r+12)8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like duh, I can't believe it

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

almost...."8r+12" is not right speed what does "r'represent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

r+1.5 so 28-x=(r+1.5)8

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

no what does "r" mean ?
