Operation Market Garden - General Montgomery's Allied plan meant to shorten the war by securing bridges across the Rhine via the Netherlands. It failed.

GI Bill of Rights - essentially, a list of benefits for returning servicemen from WW2 which included subsidies for schooling, setting up businesses, buying a home, etc..

potato masher - slang for German stick grenades

Bastogne - major holdout against the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge; it held up a number of German divisions due to fierce resistance protecting a hub of vital roads leading deeper behind Allied lines.

Berchtesgaden - an area in southern Germany that served as the home to Hitler's personal mountain retreat, the Berghof.
