Triangles ACP and BCQ are similar. z/x = BC/AC Triangles ACR and ABQ are similar. z/y = AB/AC Add the two equations: z/x + z/y = BC/AC + AB/AC = (BC + AB)/AC = AC/AC = 1 z(1/x + 1/y) = 1 divide both sides by z 1/x + 1/y = 1/z
