(Complex Numbers) Find each quotient: 2/(1-i)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply by the cotangent or (1+i)/(1+i)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did that and it ends up being (2+2i)/2 which the 2's cancel out and it ends up as just 2i, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Conjugate! Dang autocorrect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not factor the 2 out so you get (1+i)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't see how it becomes (1+i), can you explain? I multiplied the top and bottom by (1+i) and that's how I end up with 2i.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you get to the point (2+2i)/2 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, was I suppose to leave it like that and not cancel out the two on top and bottom?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now factor a 2 out of the top so (2+2i)/2 = 2(1+i)/2 and then the 2s cancel out to give you( 1+i) do you see?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I do see it, thank you! I didn't think about factoring the 2 out that last time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you had the hard part done, sometimes I forget the also!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought I was on the right track.
