a linear function means for every 1 step in the x value, the value of y changes the same amount.

for example
(0,0) to (-1,1)
we go -1 step in the x direction, and 1 step in the y direction
now from
(-1,1) to (-2,4)
we go -1 step in the x direction, and 3 steps in the y direciton.

before we only had 1 step in the y direction, now we have 3 steps. since these are not the same, this function is Not Linear.
