What does 'hierarchical' mean?

My snarky response is D-I-C-T-I-O-N-A-R-Y, but my helpful response is that it is a way of ranking things. The more important someone/something is, the higher up in hierarchy they will be. Think medieval society (King is better than Lord, Lord is better than Peasant)
