write a slope-intercept equation for a line passing through the point (3, -3) and perpendicular to x=-5.

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

This one's easy. Perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes. So you already know the slope of the line will be 1/5 (the opposite reciprocal of -5) Now, plug in (3, -3) to find b in the equation y = mx + b (-3)= (3)(1/5) + b --> -3 = 3/5 + b --> -3 - 3/5 = b --> -18/5 = b --> y = 1/5x -18/5
