Invading Turks from the north helped end the Tang dynasty. For some 50 years, China remained divided. The Song restored the empire in 960 CE. The first Song emperor, T’ai-tsu, made Kaifeng the dynasty’s capital. This city sat in the Huang River Valley, in northern China. Kaifeng was not only a center of Song government. It was also a bustling commercial center.
