OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

find the surface area of the figure

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

hartnn (hartnn):

you have the formula for surface area of prism ?

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

yes but i dont understand it ..... surface area=L.A.+2(base) lateral area=ph

hartnn (hartnn):

yes base means base area for a prism, base = rectangle so you just need sides of base to get the base area, can you find it?

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

10 & 5 i think

hartnn (hartnn):

yes! so base area =.. ?

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

50 units^2

hartnn (hartnn):

correct :) now you see there are 4 vertical surfaces, all rectangles 2 of which have same area, and other 2 have same area, if you can find dimension, then you already know how to get the area :)

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

what do you mean.....are you talking about the height value here

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, the 4 vertical surfaces, all are rectangles , right ? like 2 of them have dimensions, 4ft(height) and 5 ft

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

so i need to do 2(4*5)

hartnn (hartnn):

correct. now only 2 surfaces remain, what is the dimension ?

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

2(10*4)

hartnn (hartnn):

correct! now add all of them :)

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

80+40+100=220 220 ft^2

hartnn (hartnn):

absolutely correct :)

hartnn (hartnn):

the formula is, Total surface area = 2 (length*breadth + breadth*height + length*height)

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

oh ok i see now thanks @hartnn

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
