please explain how to do this Solve the system by the elimination method. x + y - 6 = 0 x - y - 8 = 0 When you eliminate y , what is the resulting equation? 2x = -14 2x = 14 -2x = 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x=14, because you add downward, and then in all the answers the 14 is on the left, so you add the 14

OpenStudy (da_scienceman):

please add both equatrions to get 2x=14. Then x = 14/2=7.

OpenStudy (da_scienceman):

Then just substitute for x in any of the equations to get y!

\(\begin{array}{llll} x &+ y &- 6 &= 0\\ x &- y &- 8 &= 0\\ \hline\\ 2x&+0y&-14&=0\implies 2x-14=0 \end{array} \)
