I know this is pretty elementary. but im doing an online homework, On the Last Question. BUT if I get this one wrong i have to start all over! (this is just a rounding step of the prob) Round to the tenth place. 2.588845848 would It be 2.59 OR 2.60 HUGE DIFF IN determining my answer!!!

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

2.5888 to the nearest 10th is 2.59. 2.60 would not be the nearest 10th, your only choices for nearest 10th here are 2.59 or 2.58.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The number 5 is in the tenths place. The number 8 is in the hundredths place To round 2.588845848 to the nearest tenth, you drop everything after the tenth place to get 2.5 Because because the number 8 in the hundredths place is larger than 5, this means that you add 1 to 5 to get 2.6 which is your final answer (basically you're rounding up to the next nearest tenth)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

forgive me, round to the 2 decimal

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you want to round to two decimal places, or to the nearest hundredth, then you would drop everything after the hundredths place to get 2.58 then you would bump that 8 up to 9 since the next digit (in the thousandths place) is larger than 5 so that's why 2.588845848 rounds to 2.59 (if you want to round to two decimal places)

Thanks I got it right! Stats will be the death of me!

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Oh yes my bad, was assuming it was hundredths place.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Which... i now see it was anyway.
