So helpful, thank you .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well there is 120 minutes in 2 hours and Ava walks 2.75 in 2 hour i think you'd just multiply 2.75*1.20 because you would have to move the decimal over two places. and then take 7*.75.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes i thin that is correct

OpenStudy (ranga):

No. Ava walks at 2.75 miles per hour. That means in 1 hour she would have walked 2.75 miles. Therefore, in 2 hours she would have walked 2.75 * 2 = ? miles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh sorry about that then Earthab

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait but in 2 hours it equals 120 minutes not 1 hour

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes. Jayden runs at 7 miles per hour. That means in 1 hour he will run 7 miles. In 0.75 hour he will run 7 * .75 = ? miles

OpenStudy (ranga):

No need to bring minutes here kadkins15

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes. Ava at 5.5 miles and Jayden at 5.25 miles. At this point Jayden has covered the shorter distance. If Ava stops and Jayden continues, he has to cover (5.5 - 5.25 = 0.25) miles to catch up with Ava. If Jayden runs at 7 miles per hour how much time would it take for him to cover 0.25 miles?

OpenStudy (ranga):

It is division. 7 miles takes 1 hour Divide both parts by 7 1 mile will take 1/7 hour 0.25 mile will take 0.25 * 1/7 hour = ?

OpenStudy (ranga):

0.25 * 1 / 7 is same as 0.25/7 = ?

OpenStudy (ranga):

It is 0.0357 hour

OpenStudy (ranga):

They are asking if Jayden will be able to catch up with Ava in 30 minutes which is 0.5 hour. We just found Jayden will be able to catch up with Ava in 0.0357 hour which is much smaller than 0.5 hour. So the answer to the question: Would the person who has gone the shorter distance be able to catch up within 30 minutes if the other stops? is YES.

OpenStudy (ranga):

If you want to set up a formula first then we can do so. Speed is defined as distance over time. Let s be the speed, d be the distance and t be the time. Then, by the definition of speed: s = d / t multiply both sides of the equation by t s * t = d or d = s * t So for Ava, s = 2.75, t = 2 d = s * t = 2.75 * 2 = 5.5 miles. For Jayden, s = 7, t = 0.75 d = s * t = 7 * 0.75 = 5.25 miles.

OpenStudy (ranga):

So Ava is at 5.5 miles and Jayden is at 5.25 miles. The difference is 5.5 - 5.25 = 0.25 miles. We ca use the same formula to figure out how long it will take for Jayden to catch up with Ava if Ava has stopped walking and Jayden continues to run Distance to be covered to catch up with Ava d = 0.25 miles Jayden's speed s = 7. Find t. d = s * t 0.25 = 7 * t Find t. divide both sides by 7 to isolate t: 0.25 / 7 = t t = 0.0357 hour.

OpenStudy (ranga):

you are welcome. sure post the answer.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Looks fine to me. There is one small ambiguity in the question though: Sometimes items bundled together and shipped to the same address can cost the same if the weight of the package is below some number. So if shipping 4 bouquets costs the same as shipping 1 bouquet then we will multiply only the cost of the flowers by 4 and just add shipping charge once. But since no additional details are provided what you did seems correct to me.

OpenStudy (ranga):

You too have a good one. And you are very welcome.
