Taking something to the 1/2 power is the same as taking its square root. Likewise, taking something to the 1/3 power is the same as taking its cube root, and so on and so forth. I can't really explain the "why" very well, myself, but this site has a pretty good explanation: http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view... if you're interested.
