what was Christianity's effect on European art?

It factored a lot. The church during its rise to power gained influence in government and the right to tax locals. The churches and monasteries became the local centres information, schooling and such and thereby controlled what was taught and how. Dress codes and such were all enforced. Many kings and other rulers usually had a representative of the church as an adviser so that laws were passed that satisfied the church. Marriages, laws, taxation all were influenced in part by the church over the years. In the 1500s and later there was the break with the Roman Catholic church in many places but in some at great cost. France for example had 7 religious wars (internal).

The church liked one man one wife part, did not condone divorce, transgressions meant paying the church a hefty sum to be forgiven etc.

The church in some places objected to new inventions and new ideas and thought and did everything it could to not allow for many as some proved contradictory to church teachings. It therefore meant keeping things hidden from the church and its spies.
