please help???? What is the definition of Asymptote????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

refering to mathmatical terms?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Asympotes occur on a graph when there are no existing results... For an example...a vertical asympotote happens when you have a function like f(x) = 1/x When that denominator = 0...we have a vertical asymptote because as we know...anything divided by 0 is undefined...so remember that...a vertical asymptote happens when a denominator = 0 there is also a horizontal and a slant asymptote....horizontal asymptotes happen when you see what the function will equal when you make the variable in your equation a very big number...or infinity...if it equals a number...that is the asymptote...if it equals infinity or -infinity...there is no horizontal asymptote. Hope that kind of makes sense?
