What are three reasons why the Marbury vs. Madison was so important?

The thing that made this case so important was this was when the Supreme Court staked out its position regarding the three branches of government. Had the Chief Justice been less an intellect than Marshall was, we wouldn't have three nearly equal branches of government. Marshall ruled the Supreme Court would be the final arbiter of what the Constitution means, and that has been the job of the Supreme Court ever since.
