When solving systems of equations, how do you determine what method to use?

OpenStudy (therealmeeeee):

I'll give the first steps of the rest: 2. substitution: –y + 3x = 6 y = –6x + 12 substituting the second equation into the first we get -(-6x+12)+3x=6 which can be solved for x after finding x you can use the second equation above directly to find y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it kind of depends on the equations. If you can get a variable by itself without making fractions, substitution would be easier. Or if you have two variables that can cancel each other out, then elimination is better

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yeah, since all three common methods all reach the same conclusions .. you simply use the method that you are most comfortable using.
