5x+6=3x-8 PLz help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x + 6 = 3x - 8 we want all the x terms on one side, so we will subtract 6 from both sides 5x + 6 - 6 = 3x - 8 - 6 combine like terms 5x = 3x - 14 (now subtract 3x from both sides) 5x - 3x = 3x - 3x - 14 combine like terms 2x = -14 (now divide by 2) x = - 7 check.. 5x + 6 = 3x - 8 5(-7) + 6 = 3(-7) - 8 -35 + 6 = -21 - 8 - 29 = -29 (correct) x = -7
