Mostly through military conquest. Islam most definitely took hold in some areas of southern Asia during that period and the empires that were forged by the sword did not reject military conquest. Because of the rapid expansion of these empires, the spread of Islam went far beyond the Arabian Peninsula where Muhammad began his ministry.
