At one time China and the former Soviet Union were allies engaged in a cold and sometimes hot war with the United States and its allies after the second world war. As it became clear during the administration of Richard Nixon that destroying this alliance of China with the Soviet Union was critical to the survival of the United States and the rest of the "free world" it was decided to gradually open the door to cultural exchange, trade, and eventually fully diplomatic recognition of China, as a reversal of the previous policy of containment, isolation and blockade. Kennedy also realize the futility of confrontation and had made overtures to relax the tension between the two world blocks. Had the US not taken this path of developing China as a friend and trading partner it would have eventually led to war on a scale we have yet to experience in the world. So the simple 50 cent answer to your question is, TO AVOID WAR. Its a fascinating history if you care to get into the details sometime.
