Check my work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

expand and simplify the binomial product. (x + 10)^2 i used the FOIL method and got x^2 + 10x + 10x + 100 and then i combined like terms and got x^2 + 20x^2 + 100 what did i do wrong?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Your application of the FOIL method was done just fine. However, 10x + 10x is 20x, whereas you seem to have multiplied x by itself. Don't. Start with the result of your application of the FOIL method and add those two middle terms. This will give you the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is just x^2 + 20x^2 ? i'm confused

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let me turn around and ask you a question: How did you get 20x^2, and how would you justify that result?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i added 10x+10x

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Sammy: what would you get if you added $10 to $10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20.. right?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

$20.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh wait so is it x^2+20x+100 ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

$20. Right. I notice that you did not respond as 20*(dollars)^2. Try again: add: 10x + 10x = ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, now you've got it! x^2 + 20x + 100 is perfect. Good going!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you, my mind was going blank hahaha.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Glad you've been able to solve this problem! Best to you. Over and out.
