It was in 1865 in the aftermath of the Civil War that the War Department formally established the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands. this is what is popularly known as the Freedmen's Bureau. The Freedmen's Bureau undertook the monumental task of assisting the freed former slaves. this was done in finding places for the blacks to live and work, in obtaining medical care for them, in helping to educate the blacks, in trying to reunite families that have been torn apart by slavery and war, and for providing immediate needs of the refugees. These needs included such items as food and clothing for the blacks to survive. W.E.B. Dubois, a founder of the NAACP wrote of the Bureau, "It set going a system of free labor, established the black peasant proprietor, it secured recognition of black freemen before courts of law, it founded the free public school system in the South...It relieved a vast amount of physical suffering; it transported 7000 refugees from congested centres back to the farm; and best of all, it inaugurated the crusade of the New England schoolma'am." In just its first year, the educational infrastructure of the Freedmen's Bureau was able to educated 100,000 people.
so in essence there goal was to free former slaves of present and past barrier
