Both coal and diamonds are forms of elemental carbon. Coal is brittle while diamonds are considered to be the hardest of all substances known. What is the appropriate justification for this?

This is basically depending to how both of these materials are formed. Coal are made up by organic material while diamond are crystal formed at upper layer of mantle under high temperature and pressure.
