The oxygen in the alveoli is now at a higher concentration than the oxygen in the blood coming into the capillaries surrounding the alveoli. The oxygen passively diffuses across the membrane into the blood, and is picked up by the hemoglobin in the red blood cells. The opposite happens for carbon dioxide.
