Find the values of the sine, cosine, and tangent for angle A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that the answer is neither B nor C

OpenStudy (alekos):

What makes you think that?

OpenStudy (alekos):

any comment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because the tangent = opp/adj and the opp is 24 and the adj is 36, so the tangent is 24/36 which reduces to 2/3; making tan A=3/2 a wrong answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that correct @alekos ?

OpenStudy (alekos):

Tan A is 24/36 which reduces to 2/3 so tanA must be 2/3

OpenStudy (alekos):

you just need to work out the hypotenuse any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pythagorean theorem?

OpenStudy (alekos):

yep. thats it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you walk me through that? I'm kind of rusty as you can probably tell.

OpenStudy (alekos):

sure can, but I'll only give you hints pythagoras said that in any right angled triangle the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a^2+b^2=c^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it's 36^2+24^2=1872

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what do I do from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got the answer. It was D. Thanks for your help

OpenStudy (alekos):

no probs, your welcome. well done
