Definitely not D.
Not C, for the answer we're shooting for has to be able to make a negative, like in the question.
I'm going to say B, for the negative is still outside the parenthesis so it's rational, not an i root.

what is the difference between a real root and a real square root. if i knew i could probably figure it out for sure

you take -9 and -16 square root them both

put in the cal. the square root of 9 and enter. then the square root of 16 and enter. and tell me what you get for both.
