Which of the following is a diatomic molecule? A. Ca2- B. N2 C. KCl D. MgCl2

OpenStudy (jfraser):

what does the word di-atomic mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it means consisting of two atoms.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

not just 2 atoms, but 2 of the same atom in a molecule. only one of those choices fits that description

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JFraser

OpenStudy (jfraser):

it's not A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@KeboNerd can you help me?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

stop guessing. only one of the options is made of 2 identical atoms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not trying to guess. I dont know what any of these element things mean. I need help understanding really bad.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

each element gets a unique symbol. only one of the options is made up of 2 identical atoms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well on D its Mg and Cl, witch is magnesium and chlorine. thats 2 different elements. so it must be C. But K is potassium and Cl is chlorine. So im confused.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

i never said B was wrong, i just said stop guessing and look at each of the options

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. I was and i wasn't trying to guess. (i hate guessing) But am i on the right track with my last comment?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

both C and D have more than 1 kind of atom, so it's B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks!
