What effect did World War I have on German Americans? German Americans were removed to internment camps to address fears of spying and sabotage. German-American schools, churches, and magazines largely abandoned the use of the German language. German-American communities were reduced in size as many German Americans moved back to Germany. Businesses owned by German Americans suffered from widespread boycotts organized and promoted by nativist groups.
