The Tang dynasty ruled China from 618 AD to 907 AD. The Tang dynasty established contact with India and the Middle East through trade routes. As a result, goods made from cloth, metal, and clay were exchanged. This motivated Chinese craftsmen to integrate different techniques, shapes, and styles from other cultures into their designs. Work that came from this dynasty set the standards for which later poets, painters, and sculptors aimed. During the Tang dynasty, Buddhism was adopted by the imperial family. The religion was spread through trade and movement. Additionally, the Tang dynasty built a strong army. They were able defend and expand China's borders. The Song dynasty ruled China from 960 AD to 1279 AD. Many scientific innovations were developed during the Song dynasty. For example, the compass and gunpowder were invented during this period. In terms of religion and philosophy, Buddhism retained influence especially in art and literature. However, Confucianism also grew in popularity. A belief system, called Neo-Confucianism, attempted to blend the ideas of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism.
