Bret had a rectangular piece of plywood with dimensions x feet and 10 feet. He put a frame along 15 feet of the edge of the plywood. An expression is shown below. (2x + 20) - 15 What does the expression represent? What does 2x + 20 represent? What does 2x represent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x +20 the perimeter of the plywood rectangle. Subtract 15 to find how much more edging he needs 2x is the combined length of the unknown sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So how does "Subtract 15 to find how much more edging he needs" represent 2x + 20? I got the other two I just don't know about this one.

@douglaswinslowcooper?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ranga please help me!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wasn't clear. 2x + 20 is total perimeter of board. He has only 15 to frame it so needs 2x + 20 -15 more to complete the perimeter frame.

thanks :)

What does 2x represent?

@douglaswinslowcooper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x + 10 is the perimeter = twice the length plus twice the width, though we are not told which the 10 corresponds to, so we do not know which the 2x corresponds to

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That should have been "2x + 20" and do not know to what the 20 corresponds. Sorry,. Must leave.
