It's a standard network protocol for transferring files from one host to another over a TCP-based network. This includes sending files over the internet, intranets, or LAN's.
FTP is less secure than, say FTPS, because it uses clear text sign in, and anonymous sign in if the server is configured to respect it. FTPS encrypts the Username and Password, as well as the content.
