What is the difference between a need and a want?

OpenStudy (crazycocob):

When you WANT something, you wish you can have it, but you can live without it. When you NEED something, you HAVE to have it, it's essential. And you can't live without it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A need is a necessity to live. A want is something you don't need to live but enhances your life.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A need is something like food and water you can't go without. A want is something like a new cell phone and you don't really need it.

Or what @crazycocob and @Slim-Shady said..theirs were better :) lol

A need is something you can't I've without. A want is something you don't need you desire.
