Carla likes to go bird watching with her mom. After each outing, Carla records on a graph how many birds they spotted. Is this an example of a discrete or continuous function? Explain.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

were you able to get anywhere with this?

OpenStudy (ttp):

Nope I'm confused

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you're completely stuck, think "is it possible to have 1/2 a bird?"

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

or, "is it possible to have 0.1 of a bird?"

OpenStudy (ttp):

Huh? Honestly i think it's Continuos Function. But i don't know why? :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well if it was continuous, then fractions and decimal numbers would be allowed BUT...you cannot have 1/2 a bird or 0.1 of a bird. Only positive whole numbers are allowed. Numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4, ... so that's why it's NOT continuous
