is it simply 12-10?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

careful. XZ is not tangent here to simply do that

Directrix (directrix):

First up, I have to mark up the diagram. Why do you think the answer is 2? @stupidinmath

OpenStudy (anonymous):

guessing :|

Directrix (directrix):

@stupidinmath On the diagram, do you agree that OW is a radius of the circle? And, do you see that XY is a diameter of the same circle? So, OW =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ZY/2 = OW? OW=5

Directrix (directrix):

Look at the diagram now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So.. 12 - 5 so YZ= 7?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

stop guessing ;p

Directrix (directrix):

WOZ is a right triangle with legs of lengths 5 and 12. Part of the hypotenuse is 5 but we need the other part. So, you can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find hypotenuse OZ and then subtract 5 from that to get YZ. If you remember the Pythagorean Triple (5, 12, 13) the solution will be a little faster but not too much faster. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8 haha alright..

Directrix (directrix):

5² + 12² = (OZ)² --> solve for OZ @stupidinmath

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13

Directrix (directrix):

OZ = 13. |dw:1386486369228:dw|
