Two point charges are placed on the x-axis as follows: charge q1 = 4.04nC is located at x= 0.200m , and charge q2 = 4.98nC is at x= -0.295m . What is the magnitude of the total force exerted by these two charges on a negative point charge q3 = -6.02nC that is placed at the origin?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

F1 = - k q1 q3 / (0.200)^2 < 0 is pulled toward x>0 F2 = - k q2 q3 / (0.295)^2 > 0 is pulled toward x<0 k= 9x10^9 Take their difference. The direction will be determined by which has the larger absolute magnitude.
