OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

The lateral area of a cone is 4.8 pi in.2. The radius is 1.2 in. Find the slant height

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

OpenStudy (phi):

step 1: write down the formula for the lateral area of a cone.

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

LA=rl+r^2

OpenStudy (phi):

First, you left out the pi (You do like pi, don't you?) second, that is the total area (if you put the pi in) you only want the lateral area.

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

nope i dont like it

OpenStudy (phi):

step 1: write down the formula for the lateral area of a cone.

OpenStudy (phi):

\[ LA= \pi r l \]

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

ok got that

OpenStudy (phi):

Fill in the parts you know. can you do that? what do you get ?

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

\[4.8\pi=\pi(1.2*L)\]

OpenStudy (phi):

now "solve" for L I would first divide both sides by pi. (This will make you happy... pi will go away) then divide both sides by 1.2

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

4.8=1.2L

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

L=4

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

@phi thanks :D

OpenStudy (phi):

looks good.
