find the surface area to the nearest whole number

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

i got the area of the cylinder already im stuck on the cone part

OpenStudy (phi):

Looks like you have to do this in pieces. For the cone, you only need the lateral area (the base is "inside" -- you could not paint the base of the cone) First, any idea how to find the height of the cone ?

OpenStudy (phi):

I *think* the entire figure is 12 feet tall.

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

uh sorta

OpenStudy (phi):

if 12 feet is from the top of the cylinder to the pointy end of the cone, and the cylinder is 6 feet of that 12 feet, that leaves how much for the height of the cone ?

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

6

OpenStudy (phi):

ok. so (if I am reading the diagram correctly) the height is 6 the radius of the cone is the same as the radius of the cylinder= 5 use pythagoras to find the slant height |dw:1386524504771:dw|
