Raul plans to spend $78 on two shirts and a pair of jeans. He bought two shirts for $19.89 each. How much can he spend on the jeans?

Given what's spent the equation is $78=2*$19.89 + x. X stands for the rest of the money (which Raul can spend on jeans). Now solve for x: \[x=$78-2 $19.89=$38.22\]

that's the first equation rearranged to separate x. This is how one solves for an unknown (x). The result is that x equals $38.22.
