That took me a while... but here is the answer (or at least mine) There are many aspects during the medieval time that contributed to the modern market we see today. The two biggest factors in this were guilds and banking systems. Guilds such as the craft guilds owned and operated small businesses or family workshops. Which is very similar to what we see today in small plazas. Another type of guild called Merchants were usually in possession of very high privileges within both the government and religion. Which allowed them to tweak things that bothered them in local governments usually as they pleased. Which can happen very easily with some governments today if the corporation "guild" is large enough. Before the medieval times somebody who didn't have enough money to buy land outright was stuck with their current situation, but when when the banking system arrived anybody could simply borrow money from the bank and give back interest later on. This we now know as loaning, and is a major part of everyones life today unless your a multi-millionaire, since you now can buy houses and or other expensive things. In the end Medieval guilds and banking systems have helped to create the modern economy that we see and use everyday.
