How does crossing over add to the genetic diversity of sexually reproducing organisms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The advantage of sexual reproduction is that it increseas diversity by mixing up genes in each generation. "Crossing over" of genes from one chromosome to another during meiosis (replication of chromosomes for sexual reproduction) is another way in which genetic material is remixed for the next generation.
