I'm afraid those everyones have been wrong.  In y = 2x+1, y depends on x, so x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable.  In other words, changing x changes y.  You might try writing out:  "y is the dependent variable because ....    "              and "x is the independent variable because ....."                      Good luck and ask more questions.
